There are two categories of people in the world. Under the first category, are people who consider animals to be mere bags of meat, which don’t possess any feeling or instinct. For them animals are nothing more than mindless machines that act according to the directions given to them. Whereas the second category contains the ones who consider them as divine mortals who are capable enough to display their feelings through various means. But what we feel is, that animals have their place somewhere in the middle. They are neither emotionless stuffed toys with life infused in them, nor they are similar to human beings when it comes to instincts and intellect. But they surely are accomplished enough to reciprocate the emotions that are furnished to them. Their ability to demonstrate their emotional state is not much less than that of humans. They get as much attached to the people who love them as we get to our loved ones. The strong connection between humans and animals has been exhibited to us through many means such as magazine, social media, news, etc. Humans and animals have been exemplary buddies since centuries We all have grown up listening to the tales that narrate numerous ways by which animals have been proved to be the finest companions to Homo sapiens. Many theories have verified that animals have the ability to develop a sense of attachment to the human beings. It’s because of their affectionate behaviour and unsurpassed loyalty, that many of the people are found owning pets. A pet can be very miniscule like parrots, guinea pigs, etc. or the much colossal ones like dogs, cats, horses, etc. The foremost reason of people owning pets nowadays is their unconditional love. They don’t seek for perfection in their masters. They just LOVE, without expecting much in return. It has also been stated that humans can be as much as in love with their pets as much as they can love their fellow beings.Sometimes, even more! History has been a witness to the glorious tales that have portrayed the extraordinary bonding between animals and their masters. We all have been familiar to the story of the Great Indian Emperor,Maharana Pratap and his prized possession, Chetak. The magnificence, vigor and dependability of the horse was praised by everyone of his dynasty. He heroically saved the life of his master by carrying him on his saddle. This was not the only tale of an animal’s loyalty towards his master. Many of the animals have even lost their lives for the sake of saving their beloved’s life. Some stories are left untold. The extraordinary friendliness between the Bishnoi community and the animals, has been surprising people since centuries. They forfeited their own life to save the animals. In return, the animals delivered them countless benefits like security, drawing the cart, amusement, etc. Apart from the materialistic benefits, they also imparted affection and empathy to the Bishnoi. Animals don’t have the tendency to betray us like our own fellow beings. They have been blessed with the natural inclination to be devoted to the people who own them. Animals are amorous and it’s not much difficult to fall in love with them. They reciprocate better to our care and affection. The friendship between two humans may not last long, but animals fulfil their friendship till they breathe in their last breath. They are innocently oblivious towards the practice of foul play. Deception is something alien to them. Animals are consecrated with the natural art of making us feel good about ourselves. They give us a feeling of self-acceptance, which we should be giving ourselves. Apart from the emotional comfort, they also grant us innumerable advantages. Studies say that animals prove to be the best playmates for the children. Many of the children have been found growing up with their pets like dogs and cats. It has been observed that the people who grow up with animals are capable of building a much stronger connection with nature and they are believed to be suffused with lots of positive energy in them. Some people even go beyond the conventions. They treat their pets as an important member of their family. Some even consider their pets to be stand-ins for their children. Some domesticate animals for the purpose of security. Dogs have been outstanding companions to the police for tracing thieves and lawbreakers. Some canines are even kept as watchdogs to safeguard their homes. Not only dogs, horses also have been beneficial for their exceptional strength and dependability. Horses have served humans for years as an excellent war-comrade. It is nearly impossible for anyone to sum-up the utilities of an animal to humans, in words. The relationship between animals and humans has given rise to many sagas that have shaped history This companionship has never seen an ends since the ancient times. Even today there are many people whose lives are blessed by an animal in some way or the other. For the love bestowed by animals on us, for the loyal companionship of our animal friends, for the lives saved by mute animals, we owe something to them. And that is, A Portion of our Love!
While turning the pages of a magazine, I found something that engulfed my mind immediately. I found a trend of flaunting leather made clothing and accessories by the people. More the number of leather products I found, I started analysing in my mind that how many animals must have been slaughtered just for the sake of vogue. I question myself, Do these people know that the things they or holding or the clothes they are wearing were once a skin of a living animal! The sad part is, most of them are already aware about it, but still chose to continue opting for such products. What makes them so insensitive towards the actual costs of these things? Is the pursuit of luxury much more important than the lives of the innocents? Leather is nothing more than sheer epitome of cruelty to animals. On a daily basis countless animals are slaughtered ruthlessly for their skins. The most disgusting fact about the leather is that it is nothing more than a dead animal who have been murdered by the hands of people. The problem lies in the misconception that leather is the by-product of meat production. But due to increasing demands of leather in market, animals are exclusively killed for production of leather. Millions of animals including cats, dogs and primarily cows are skinned alive to make leather products. As a result, there is a huge decline in the number of animals, which implies the degradation of our rich biodiversity. Unfortunately, India is the largest leather producer country in the world. To our surprise India comprises of 70% Hindus, who not only worship the cow but also consider animals to be holy entities that are meant to be fostered and cared. In Hindu places of worships, leather articles are not allowed to be taken inside the temple premises. But to the contrast, Cows are goaded to the over crowded trucks. Their tails are broken off and eyes are rubbed with chilly powders so as to annoy them and force them to move. The consequences of using leather products don’t end here. The manufacturing process of finished leather not only involves cold-blooded murder of animals but it also pollutes the environment. Thousands of workers that work in leather tanneries are reported of developing cancers due to chemical used during the procedure. The waste products that include dust, hair, shavings and discharge containing heavy metals like cadmium, lead, etc. generated in the leather tanneries are disposed as it is on the soil, which pollutes the soil for many years. The waste being non-biodegradable seeps down the soil and further pollutes the ground water such water when consumed by infants and children, causes life-threatening diseases like heavy metal poisoning. Heavy metal poisoning disrupts the mental growth of an infant forcing him to life of a mentally impaired. The leather manufacturers purposely set up their tanneries on the banks of the river for cheap and continuous supply of water. They not only consume large amounts of water but also pollute it, leaving the contaminated water for the purpose of consumption by common people. . Consequently the people located near the leather tanneries are left devoid of water and spend their lives in shortage of clean drinking water. The power consumption of leather factories is so large that it deprives the normal localities of sufficient power supply. The leather products, however made from an animal skin, should be biodegradable. But a common practice has been observed among the leather manufacturers. They make the leather undergo multiple processes in which high doses of preservatives and colourant are added to it. This chemical adulteration of pure leather makes it almost impossible to degrade naturally. It takes couple of years to completely degrade in soil. So the whole process from production to consumerism of leather, only leads to destruction, whether it’s of animal’s life, its habitat or our entire environment. Moreover people lack knowledge that there are many alternate fabrics that can be used in place of leather for the purpose of clothing, shoes, bags, upholstery, etc. Canvas or synthetic polyesters are a better option for the long run. These are known for their prolonged shelf-life and mechanical durability. There are many leading companies in the world that are providing non-leather commodities at the affordable prices. Now have a look around, and see how many dead animals in the form of leather goods, are surrounding you. Question yourself; do they deserve a treatment as such? Are they meant to be slaughtered by us just for the sake of our fascination? If your answer is No, then stand up; abstain from animal cruelty and SAY NO TO LEATHER!
